Apprenticeship program in Italy for glass artists
Through a new and unique partnership with the Scottish Arts Council, up to three Craft Funded Placements at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) are being offered to creative practitioners, running from 1 July – 30 September 2008. These are being offered on a pilot basis through the Scottish Arts Council’s Crafts Creative Development Awards which support individuals to create new work through awards of up to £10,000.

This new grant scheme is for makers living or based in Fife, to develop their skills, products, markets or do something new such as a collaborative project or a piece of research. Awards between £300 and £500 are available, although they can also make two awards for up to £1,000 for exceptional projects. The grants are designed to assist career oriented makers develop their work and can be used to prepare for an exhibition, expand or find new markets for products, buy a piece of equipment, carry out research and development, do a specific project (e.g. a local crafts initiative with a school or community group), pay for travel, accommodation and fees for an exhibition or conference, or attend a training course.
Applications will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the applicant’s work and the extent to which the grant will help their work develop. 'Culture Talk' is a unique consultation, the results of which will be used to shape culture in the Fife area. China — UK Connections through Culture is a joint initiative between the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the British Council with support from the Scottish Government. The initiative offers support, information, advice, networking opportunities and development grants to cultural organisations in China and the UK, aiming to build relationships and to develop exciting cultural collaborations between organisations in the two countries.
There is a website which contains a searchable database of organisational profiles and interests. All cultural organisations in the UK and China can register on the database to enable potential partner organisations to make contact.

Craftscotland.org is the international showcase for Scottish craft. It is a gateway to all crafts based activities for the public and the crafts community. At the heart of the website is a searchable online directory of craft makers, retailers, galleries and museums. Every craft-related business based in Scotland can add their details to the directory free of charge. On their free page, makers can talk about their work and retailers, galleries and museums can list their venue, with contact details and an image.
Directory members can promote their business to 50,000 monthly users. Makers and venues have been contacted by site visitors and invited to exhibit in the Netherlands, Paris and in UK galleries and retailers. They have also received enquiries from curators, commercial buyers, individuals and journalists.

Vetrate Artistiche Toscane is a company based in Siena (Italy) which specialises in the creation of stained, painted and fused glass. There are four apprenticeships lasting two months (January-February; March-April; July-August; November-December) and two lasting one month (May-October). Although the scheme is of particular benefit to the beginner and intermediate, advanced and professional glass artists have found the apprenticeship to be useful to enhance their skills and exchange ideas.
