Glasgow based artist Richard Wright is the 2009 winner of the Turner Prize for the creation of a subtle and unashamedly beautiful fresco in gold leaf. Richard used the painstaking techniques of the old masters to make his glistening wall painting for the exhibition at Tate Britain in London. |

Up-and-coming Scottish musician Sorren Maclean is to appear on the BBC Alba Hogmanay Show this year. This bright young indie musician, who benefited from the Scottish Arts Council YMI Demo fund in its early years, has recently been spotted supporting Mumford and Sons and is raising eyebrows on the music scene for his “enchanting acoustic” sounds (The List). |

Drake Music Scotland will receive funding from the National Lottery for their TRACS project, after winning the ‘People's Millions’ competition earlier this month. |
The team at Drake Music Scotland are now in the process of setting up a recording studio in Craigmillar, Edinburgh for people with disabilities. They’ll begin running projects next summer with people of all ages with all types of disabilities - from teenage rock bands wanting to record their first demo to song-writers keen to promote their talent on the web.
Composer Barry Guy, was shortlisted this month from over 300 submissions for the British Composers Awards for his composition Schweben; Aye But Can Ye? a piece, funded by the Scottish Arts Council and commissioned by the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra in the new Contemporary Jazz Composition category.
It was Barry’s creative method of composition and creative score that particularly caught the judge’s eye. Supporting the new category, the Awards Event this year hosted the appearance of Scottish ensemble, Brass Jaw. The quartet of three saxophonists and a trumpeter gave the first performance of a new BBC Radio 3 commission from composer John Surman who celebrates his 65th birthday this year.

On Saint Andrew's Day (30th November 2009) at the Town House in Inverness the Highland Branch of the Saltire Society presented its award for an outstanding contribution to Highland culture to musician Blair Douglas for his composition the Gaelic Mass, An Aifreann Ghàidhlig. |
