Moving On - a new vision in dance
Performers, choreographrs and policy makers unite for dance and disability

Moving On is a one-day conference on Monday 30 March 2009 being led by Glasgow-based companies Dance House and Indepen-dance in partnership with Culture & Sport Glasgow and the event host Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

Moving On will bring together performers, choreographers and policy makers to debate a wide range of topics surrounding dance and disability, including its status and profile, performance and audiences, aesthetics and research. Discussion at the event will lay the groundwork for a major international dance and disability festival in Glasgow. |

The conference, instigated in response to recommendations made in a Scottish Arts Council report on Dance and Disability in Scotland - 2008 (pdf), will explore, inspire and celebrate the potential of dance and disability and will act as a catalyst for the development of new and exciting collaborations.

The report also encourages public support for 'the involvement of disabled dancers within all levels of dance training of all genres and for the involvement of dance within arts-based disability and health initiatives.' |
Moving On will start this process by engaging with dancers, choreographers and those involved in arts-based disability and health initiatives.
Jo Verrent, Access, Disability and Inclusion Director says:
"Involving disabled people in dance - at all levels and in all genres- is slowly but increasingly gaining ground throughout the UK and nowhere more so than within Scotland, which has an impressive array of projects, companies, inititatives and individuals working towards this aim.
It is rare for people to have the opportunity to come together and share what is going on. It's not about getting everyone to see the same way forward, it's more about sharing the diversity of practice and approaches, putting different elements under the miscroscope to see what makes them tick."

Moving On - The Performance

On the sunday before the conference, this evening event presents a challenging and moving line-up, including guest international performers and local artists. This will be a rare opportunity to see Claire Cunnigham's first work, evolution, which has toured internationally to great acclaim. There will also be an extraordinary duet from Italy, performed by dancers Laura Scudella and Juri Roverato, who have studied with Alito Alessi and qualified from his Danceability system.
The programme will also feature new work from Caroine Bowditch, Scottish Dance Theatre's Agent for Change and from Indepen-dance.
