Now in its 34th year, Perth Festival of the Arts presents its most ambitious programme to date with artists ranging from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to Teenage Fanclub and Paul Merton.

Building on the success of the 2004 Festival (which experienced a 40% increase in ticket sales and included artists such as Lesley Garrett and The Stranglers) the organisers are offering a programme which they hope will offer something for everyone.

Ian Rankin and Jackie Leven present 'Jackie Leven Said' - a powerful new story written and narrated by Ian Rankin with music from Jackie Leven.  You can have an audience with Sir David Frost or see Tango Siempre presenting 'Subitango' at the Salutation Hotel.  Below is a small taster of what else happening in and around Perth until the end of May.

Music

This year's festival features a wide range of music from Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and The Scottish Chamber Orchestra to Joan Armatrading and her band.  With so much on offer, there's bound to be something for you.

The Bell Lawrie Festival Concert features Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.  The festival has been overwhelmed with requests for tickets and this festival finale event is now sold out

Also appearing at the festival are The Russian State Symphony Orchestra and the Choir of The King's Consort amongst others.  The Schubert Ensemble will perform an evening concert at Scone Palace, and will also give morning Coffee Concerts at Perth City Hall.  Their performance at St Mary's Monastery is sold out.

The English Touring Opera will present three operas, including a performance designed for primary school children.  The (Little) Magic Flute is a fun-filled magical journey for the young and the young at heart.

Teenage Fanclub will play their first ever show in Perth on 28 May, supported by rising stars Raising Kain.  You can also catch Edinburgh band Aberfeldy at Perth Theatre on 22 May.  One of 10 Scottish bands showcased at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas, this year, Aberfeldy also performed in Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh as part of the Triptych festival.

Perth Museum and Art Gallery will stage an exhibition by Scottish artists William Gillies and John Maxwell and will also host an exhibition by the Ukranian artist Grygoriy Shyshko.

The ArTay marquee will be sited in St John’s Place form 19th to 22nd May. This is a free event featuring the works of Scottish contemporary artists and they are all for sale.

It is worth noting that many art galleries and organisations stage special exhibitions in Festival week and a full list of these is included in the Festival brochure, now available from Perth Theatre.  This year, Perth City Centre Management will be organising an Art Mart along Tay Street on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May. Many people in Perth will remember this event from years ago and the Festival is delighted to see that it will be running again this year.
