Welcome to the Skye Festival

Welcome to our Festival.  There are 70 events in a small, beautiful venue in the southern end of the Isle of Skye. Come and listen to music from Scotland and other places around the World. You can enjoy these even if you speak very little English! There will also be theatre, film, dances, a book festival and walks and workshops during the day. All our events are suitable for families.

What's on

Some highlights from the 14th Skye Festival programme:-

Skye's first book festival

Fèis an Eilein is proud to present Aos Dana, Skye's first book festival, attached to the Fèis.  Aos Dana was the name by which learned men and women of Gaelic society were known.  They were the intellectual leaders of the medieval Gaelic world and their poetry followed the style of the ancient Irish bardic tradition.  Hosted in the Somerled Rooms of Armadale Castle, the programme includes Angus Peter Campbell speaking on Gaelic writing and John Purser, the foremost authority on the history of Scotland's music as well as events for children and writers.

Dannsa and Amh - 20 July

A celebration of the old and the new traditional dance and music.

Dannsa’s scintillating step-dance footwork and vibrant Scottish dances, executed with grace and flair, are the result of years of performing and teaching experience.  Amh offer a breath-taking performance with Andrew Robertson and Iseabail MacTaggart, 2004 Mod Gold Medal winner, singing Gaelic songs in a unique and contemporary style.  Don't miss it!

Indian Nights concert - 15 July

Diptesh Bhattacharya, playing Sarod, and a rising star in the galaxy of Indian Classical Music, has won the hearts of audiences with his personal style and unique tonal quality.  He is joined by Shib Shankar Ray, table, a renowned soloist and accompanist.  Young musicians from Portree, Catherine and Stephanie Tinney, also perform.

Festival Club: Fire Night with Mark Saul

Australian Mark Saul is one of the world's most successful and respected contemporary composers of bagpipe music.  Be among the first to hear him on his debut UK tour at the Festival Club with te Pooka, Scotland's premier fire performance company, setting the night alight with some spectacular pyrotechnic mayhem!

Tallachan/Venues

Fèis an Eilein is based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Scotland’s Gaelic College.  This is in south Skye, 13 miles from the junction of the A851 at Broadford and 2 miles from the ferry in Armadale.  Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has three venues.  Àrainn Chaluim Chille is the main concert venue and reception area, situated between the road and the sea.  An Talla Mhòr is 200 metres further south along the road towards Armadale and the Amphitheatre or Amharclann is the brand new outdoor arena which will be used on some dry nights!

There are also events in Portree on Skye, at The Aros Experience and An Tuireann, and on the Island of Raasay, which lies between Skye and the mainland and is reached by the 20 minute ferry that sails from Sconser, north of Broadford.  A late event will require an overnight stay.  Fèis an Eilein also started to work with the community of Trotternish in north Skye last year.
