Literature is one of Scotland’s principal national assets. Many of our writers, past and present, are renowned internationally. Just think of J.K Rowling, Ian Rankin, Alan Warner, Jackie Kay and Alexander McCall Smith to name only a select few.

Literature helps people develop the essential skills of literacy, articulacy, independence of thought and enterprise. It is also the carrier of our different languages.
In the globalised world of the 21st century, the knowledge and skills of a country’s people will be crucial to its success. Literature will help equip every Scot to live, work, reflect, communicate and engage in this new and complex environment. |
