Artist of the month: King Creosote

Biography
Tune Up tour

King Creosote is the first musician to tour on the 2006/07 Tune Up bill, along with Twisted Folk artist Jeremy Warmsley and Slowclub.

Biography

King Creosote (aka Kenny Anderson), is the driving force behind the Fence Collective, a grouping of musicians which he founded with his brothers Pip Dylan (Ian) and Lone Pigeon (Gordon) in 1995.

Previously lead singer/songwriter for Scottish bands Skuobhie Dubh Orchestra and Khartoum Heroes, Anderson's aim was to create music in a stress-free environment, surrounded by like-minded friends.  The East Neuk of Fife, Anderson's home, was the perfect location.

He began producing tunes at a prolific rate, recording album after album at home, and released them on his own Fence Records label.

King Creosote; Courtesy: Beyondit Promotion Local and independent record stores further afield, such as Avalanche in Edinburgh, Monorail in Glasgow and Rough Trade in London, spread the word, and like-minded musicians, including KT Tunstall, began to gravitate towards Fence and its jam sessions in the local Ship Tavern.  The Fence Collective now boasts dozens of artists.

King Creosote released over two dozen albums on limited release, but in 2003 put out his first properly distributed national release, Kenny and Beth's Musakal Boatrides, a collection of everything from drunken sea shanties to experimental drone-folk to feisty skiffle-pop.  Another home-recording, Rocket D.I.Y., was released through Domino/Fence in 2005.  K.C. Rules OK, a collaboration with The Earlies and released on their imprint of Names/679 Recordings, followed later in the same year.

Tune Up tour

King Creosote plays six dates in the Highlands & Islands in October, along with Jeremy Walmsley.  Both artists are featured by Twisted Folk, 'an umbrella under which musicians whose sound has in some ways been enriched by folk and roots history can gather.'  King Creosote will then continue his solo tour with dates in Glasgow and England.
