Tune Up tour

Paul Towndrow tours Scotland in May and June as part of the Tune Up programme.

Biography

Paul Towndrow is a Scottish saxophonist and composer who has received international recognition for his work.  In 2003 he was in the last four in the World Saxophone Competition at Montreux Jazz Festival, and won the Public Prize by audience vote following his performance with the Geri Allen Trio.  The following year he reached the finals of the London Jazz Festival.  On both occasions, he was the only UK entrant to reach the finals.  Paul has headlined at other international jazz festivals such as Brecon, Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Cheltenham.  He has also performed across Europe, including in Norway, Switzerland, Italy and Russia.

Paul won an international scholarship in 1999 to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA.  In 2002 he won the Peter Whittingham Jazz Award, and he has since secured UK three touring grants from Jazz Services.

Paul leads two groups of his own, The Paul Towndrow Quartet and The Paul Towndrow Sextet.  With the Quartet he has recorded two albums – Colours (FMR Records, 2003) and Out Of Town (Keywork Records, 2005).  The Sextet’s first album, Six By Six, is due for release on 28 May 2007.

As well as his own projects, Paul also performs with a number of groups, including the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and Brass Jaw.  He has also toured with American group The Bad Plus, and has appeared with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, The Peatbog Faeries and Hue and Cry.

Paul has composed and arranged for various ensembles, as well as for television and radio.  He is also a jazz educator, teaching saxophone, improvisation, theory and composition privately as well as through with Dumfries Youth Jazz Group.  Paul is course director for the Jazz Glasgow Summer School which runs during the Glasgow International Jazz Festival, and has given masterclasses and workshops at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Napier University, Douglas Academy Music School, Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra and Dumfries Youth Jazz Orchestra. Tune Up tour

The Paul Towndrow Sextet will launch their new album, Six By Six, on 28 May 2007, the day before they begin their Tune Up tour.  The Sextet features Paul Towndrow on alto and soprano saxophone, Konrad Wiszniewski (tenor saxophone), Tom MacNiven (trumpet & flugelhorn), Steve Hamilton (piano), Alyn Cosker (drums) and Mike Janisch (bass).
