Artist of the Month: Phil Bancroft Quartet
Phil Bancroft Quartet Headlong Tour dates Tune Up
Fast becoming recognised as one of the leading players in European jazz, saxophonist Phil Bancroft first came to prominence in the late 1980s. He was the main composer in the trailblazing John Rae Collective and has since been a mainstay in many of the major bands to emerge from Scotland over the past 15 years.

Having studied with George Garzone, David Liebman and Steve Coleman, Phil has taken his talents across the continents. He's blown on to the New York and Amsterdam scenes, jammed in the townships of South Africa and played for an Indian classical saxophone virtuoso in his Chennai house. |
He has collaborated with may great musicians including Reid Anderson, David Berkman and French collective ARFI among many others.
Phil's music is rooted in the classical American tradition but also has influence from other sources including Celtic, Indian and Western classical music. He expresses a unique voice through his tenor and soprano saxophones resulting in distinctive, evocative music.
The quartet features:
- Thomas StrØnen, a star drummer from Norway
- Steve Watts, a leading bassist
- Mike Walker, a guitar genius from England
The foursome represent some of the most charismatic and individual performers from some of the strongest contemporary music scenes in the world.

The quartet's album 'Headlong' was released in 2004 to rave reviews. The group will be playing music from the recording on tour and copies can be bought from the Caber Music website.
The CD features each of the four instruments playing around with some haunting melodies. The music has fantastic layers of percussion and guitar chords play over some solid bass playing. |
The Caber Music site also features reviews of 'Headlong' and of the quartet's live gigs, as well as other recordings of other bands that Phil Bancroft been involved with.
