The annual experimental music and visuals festival, Kill Your Timid Notion (KYTN), is back this month with it's 2006 programme.  The festival, taking place at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA), runs from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 February and once again features a rich programme bringing together experimental music, film and visual art.

Background and context

KYTN is a festival born of a passion for experimental music, film and visual art, and figuring out how they can relate to and inspire each other in a unique programme of film screening, live performances and happenings in every corner of DCA.  KYTN is described as ‘a step across the border between sound and vision’.

In the words of KYTN curator, Barry Esson: ' "Experimental’"doesn’t mean art that is dull, torpid or pretentious; our programme presents filmmakers who do incredible, trance inducing things with film, things you could never imagine; and musicians who with nothing more than a stone and a plate of glass create sounds of such vehement beauty that they can open your ears to new possibilities and experiences. Experimental means taking chances, going beyond the norm, finding your own voice.'

The programme 2006

The festival consists of a three-day radical performance programme, a free opening symposium, and an exhibition which runs 18 February – 26 March 2006.  This year’s live line-up boasts ‘the best of the underground’ from Dundee and everywhere appearing in varying combinations of recitals, screenings and viewings across the DCA’s performance, gallery and cinema spaces, resulting in a ‘hallucinatory, revelatory and mind/ear-expanding’ experience in response to the impulses of the moment.

The line-up includes performances and installations by:
- Emma Hart and Benedict Drew
- Tony Conrad
- Bruce McClure
- Sandra Gibson, Luis Recoder and Daniel Menche
- Jennifer Reeves and Anthony Burr
- Kazuo Imai and Atsuhiro Ito

Theorists and artists join forces or battle it out in their exploration of a range of themes focusing on sound art in the festival’s symposium, and local artist Derek Lodge’s ‘Word Processor’ exhibition will be a ‘social space’ featuring a weekly performance (visit the DCA website for dates), which could star visitors in its four collaborative short films…

Dundee Rep Theatre are hosting the KYTN Fringe this year.  For more information, contact Mike Kane on 01382 206699.

A Festival Pass for all three days costs £26 (£22 concessions).  Day passes and individual film tickets are also available.
