Showcase Scotland is an annual event that seeks to raise the profile of Scottish music internationally.

Background and context

Showcase Scotland takes place during the second week of the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.  Over five days, promoters, record label representatives, agents and the press from around the world are given the opportunity to network with the Scottish music industry, and to see Scotland’s musicians doing what they do best.

Showcase Scotland aims to secure international performances for Scottish-based artists, and to introduce new artists to existing audiences.  Musical directors and programmers of leading festivals and venues from around the world are targeted to attend the event, and around 60 songwriters, bands and musicians are showcased.  All concerts all programmed as part of Celtic Connections, and concert-goes may not even be aware they are attending a Showcase Scotland event.

Showcase Scotland’s link with Celtic Connections ensures that promoters and bands benefit from the reaction of a live audience.  New and young artists open all concerts, so that Scottish audiences are introduced to new talent when they attend a Celtic Connections performance, and these acts gain exposure and experience both locally and internationally.

A trade fair takes place at the end of the Showcase Scotland weekend, where promoters meet artists and their representatives to discuss bookings for gigs and tours, and even recording contracts. Breabach; Photo: Sionaid Frame

Showcase programme

Burnsong will be launching their Tune Up tour on the opening night of Showcase Scotland.  Sophie Bancroft, Riley Briggs, Boo Hewerdine, Niki King, Geoff Martyn, Marc Pilley, David Scott and Emily Smith.  The Annual Piping Concert, two album launches and BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2007 Final also form part of the Showcase Scotland programme.

Featured events

Each year, Showcase Scotland features a special programme of music from another European country.  This year it is promoting the music of Wales alongside that of Scotland.  Gwenan Gibbard is joined by Huw Williams, Stephen Rees and Dafydd Roberts.  Wales Arts International will hold a seminar at the event.

2007 is the year Scotland celebrates Highland Culture.  Highland 2007 will be holding a seminar at the start of a year of exciting events and activities taking place throughout the Highlands, and beyond.

The first ever Tune Up conference will give promoters an opportunity to network, and hopefully spark off ideas for new tours.

Showcase Scotland is produced by Active Events on behalf of Celtic Connections, the Scottish Arts Council, British Council Scotland, Highland 2007, Wales Arts International and the PRS Foundation.
