Heriot - Watt University Young Composer Competition
An invitation to write an ensemble piece open to all students in full time education in SCOTLAND.
The piece is to be written for the COMA Scotland group, 'Inchcolm New Music Ensemble', based at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. COMA (contemporary music for amateurs) has a policy of commissioning composers to write for a flexible ensemble..
The composition starting point shall be the Celtic plainchant composed and sung on Inchcolm, an Island in the river Forth near Edinburgh where hundreds of years ago, Augustinian monks lived and worshiped in the Abbey.
The composition should have a maximum duration of ten minutes, and be written for voices and any combination of orchestral instruments. Pieces must be written with flexibility of voicing and/or instrumentation in mind as the group that will perform the piece could be formed of any combination of voices and instruments.

Barbirolli International Oboe Festival and Competition - Isle of Man
The next Babirolli Oboe Festival & Competition will be held from Saturday 28 March to Saturday 4 April 2009.

Getxo International Jazz Festival
Entry is open to all European groups of all musical tendencies and styles who interpret jazz music. A selection committee will choose four groups from among the applicants, who will perform between 1st and 5th July at the Getxo International Jazz Festival, Spain.
The maximum age limit of each member of the participating groups is 30 years.

Glasgow City of Music
Director General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura visited Glasgow on Wednesday 20 August to announce that the City's bid to join UNESCO's worldwide Creative Cities Network as City of Music was successful.
Scotland becomes the only nation in the world with two UNESCO Creative Cities, joining Edinburgh City of Literature (awarded in 2004).

European Atelier for Young Festival Managers
The European Festivals Association (EFA) proudly announces the official CALL FOR INTEREST to attend the second edition of the European Atelier for Young Festival Managers hosted by the Varna Summer International Music Festival in Varna (Bulgaria) from 26 April to 3 May 2009.
The European Atelier for Young Festival Managers is an extraordinary training programme specifically designed for young festival operators working in the programming department or those who have the ambition to enroll a function in the artistic department of a festival.
Workshop leaders and speakers include a unique range of the most experienced festival directors as well as young, innovative and trend-setting festival pioneers.

Cryptic Nights
For 2009, Cryptic will create a pilot programme of regular monthly events at CCA titled ‘Cryptic Nights’ which explores contemporary cross art form work – from live performance to screen based work. First Thursday of every month from February – December 2009 – put it in your diary!

St Magnus Composers' Course
St Magnus Composers' Course takes place between 13 and 24 June 2009. It offers the opportunity to hear, meet and work with professional musicians performing at the St Magnus Festival. Students' pieces will be developed and rehearsed during the course and be performed during the Festival on Wednesday 24 June.
Individual tuition will give each composer the chance to present scores to one of the resident composers, allowing for critical comment and feedback on a one-to-one basis.
Prior to attending the course, each composer will have started work on a new piece of music (5-7 minutes) for instrumental ensemble.

Orkney Conducting Course
Directed by the conductor Martyn Brabbins, this course takes place between 13 and 24 June 2009. It provides an opportunity for conductors to share in an intensive period of study, enabling participants to work with orchestras, ensembles, conductors and soloists. Participants will also work with the St Magnus Composers' Course and conduct a Festival concert of new works written by the composers during the course.

Road to Hogmanay
Road to Hogmanay is an initiative developed to showcase unsigned Scottish talent on George Square over the festive period.
Every Thursday from the 27 November to Thursday 11 December 3 acts will play the Big Stage on George Square.
From these acts YOU can decide who wins a coveted slot at the Glasgow Hogmanay Celebrations - playing the ultimate gig on George Square or at King Tuts Wah Wah Tent, Glasgow.

Youth Music Theatre (YMT) Auditions
