Projects funded by the Youth Music Initiative (YMI) can be broadly divided into formal and informal sector activities.

Formal sector
Activities delivered by local authority staff and teachers mainly during school time.

Informal sector
Activities delivered through the YMI scheme by independent and national music/arts organisations outside school time in learning environments that are not school-based such as youth clubs or arts centres.
