Scots Poem of the month - December 2004

Haunfast

Somethin auld: the years afore
Somethin new: the morn's door
Somethin borraed: kirk, or haa
Somethin blue: sky clear o sna
As bricht as ony wattergaw
A cloodless future spent as twa

About the poet

Sheena Blackhall

Sheena Blackhall is a North East writer, illustrator, traditional ballad singer and storyteller. From 1998-2003 she was Creative Writing Fellow at Aberdeen University's Elphinstone Institute.


She has published two Scots novellas. ten short story collections and forty poetry collections. Two of her plays have been televised.

She has won several national awards for Scots poetry and short-story writing. In 2003 she represented Scotland as a guest of the Smithonian Institute in Washington in the 'Scotland on the Mall' event.

Sheena's published works include Stagwyse (Charles Murray Trust 1998), The Singing Bird (GKB Enterprises, 2000), A Boorich o Breets (Severin Publishing, 2002), Loon (Itchy Coo, 2003), Minnie (SLRC, 2004) and The Dule Tree (Finavon Print and Design, 2004), to name only a few.
