Visual Arts awards available

Jolomo Awards 2009 for Scottish Landscape Painting
The Jolomo Award for Scottish Landscape Painting is open to artists who live and work in Scotland and have studied at a Scottish College of Art or if self taught, be proposed by a qualified referee.  The main prize is £20,000, with a runner up receiving £4,000 supported by two further awards of £3,000.

The Aberdeen Visual Artists Awards Scheme
The Aberdeen Visual Artists Awards Scheme supports the work of outstanding Aberdeen -based artists by awarding grants towards the cost involved in researching and creating new work. Artists must be able to demonstrate a commitment to their work and to advancing their skills base and ideas.  Artists must live within the Aberdeen City Council boundary or work, maintain a studio space, or be a member of and regularly use a visual arts facility within Aberdeen.
Deadline: Friday 27 February 2009

Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh
The Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh (formerly known as the Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award Scheme) scheme offers awards to individual artists living and/or working in Edinburgh towards costs in creating new work or developing current work.  Awards up to a maximum value of £1,000 are available.
Deadline: Thursday 29 January 2009

Creative Islanders - Hebridean Go and Meet Fund
Creative Islanders is an ongoing initiative by HI~Arts to foster better cultural links throughout the islands of the Inner and Outer Hebrides. This new fund will enable island-based arts practitioners, arts groups and community groups with an interest in the arts, to undertake visits to other Hebridean islands, with the aim of encouraging better dialogue and the hope of stimulating joint projects and activities.
Grants of up to £500 are available to support the costs involved in inter-Hebridean visits, which may include transport costs, accommodation, subsistence and other directly relevant costs (eg child care). Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust
Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust works within the arts and healthcare environment.  Their work ranges from commissions for new landmark buildings and health centres, to a new opportunity funded integrated arts programme for stroke sufferers both within rehabilitation settings and communities.  They would like to hear from visual and applied artists who are interested in working within an arts and healthcare environment and would like to be considered for future developments within Tayside and possibly outwith.  Previous experience is not essential but useful.

Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop - Creative Initiatives
Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop (ESW) is seeking proposals for The Creative Initiatives award - designed to assist artists wishing to develop small to medium-sized projects. Proposals are not limited geographically and may range from gallery-based work to site specific installations, web-based projects, performance or research-based activity. Two awards of £2,500 are available. The artist(s) will have free use of the workshop and use of the project space, along with technical and administrative support from ESW’s staff team.

Creative Lab at the CCA: Call for Submissions
The Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow invites submissions from artists to explore new ideas and methods in the Creative Lab space.  Artists working in live art, contemporary performance, new theatre, time-based media and interdisciplinary arts sectors are invited to submit proposals to be considered for a CCA Creative Lab. The Creative Lab space at the CCA is a light and versatile room providing an opportunity for emergent and established artists to have time for process, rather than focusing on final product. There are 12 slots, up to 4 weeks each from April 2009 – March 2010.

CALQ Residency by the CCA: Call for Submissions
The Centre for Contemporary Arts (CCA)  – now in their fourth year of an exchange programme with the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres in Quebec (CALQ) - are looking for submission from artists for a three month exchange.  The exchange will focus on sound installation, contemporary music (instrumental, electroacoustic and electronic music), audio art and media arts sectors, in which the candidates work primarily with new technologies. The exchange will run for three months between May and August 2009. Deadline: Monday 5 January 2009

CashBack for Communities - Art of the Pitch
The Scottish Government is currently supporting a matching grant scheme administered by Arts & Business Scotland aimed specifically at encouraging business sponsorship of arts activities to help divert young people from becoming involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.  The funding, £600,000 over two years, comes from the CashBack for Communities initiative which uses money seized from criminals to provide free activities for 10-19 year olds throughout Scotland. 
To promote the grant scheme, Arts & Business is planning two “Dragons Den” style events called “Art of the Pitch”. The first event will be held in Glasgow on Monday 1 December at the City Halls. A second event will be held in Aberdeen in early 2009.

The Moray Council’s Arts Development Team, Elgin, is updating its database of artists living and working in the area.
The Arts Development team uses freelance arts practitioners on a regular basis and is asked to recommend people who can deliver high quality workshops and projects. If you are a visual artist, musician, dance or drama specialist, video/film-maker or writer and have experience of delivering workshops to a range of ages and abilities please let us know by completing a very simple form.

New website resource for artists
PAR+RS: Public Art Resource+Research Scotland
The Public Art Resource+Research Scotland (PAR+RS) is a new initiative being developed by the Scottish Arts Council that aims to promote excellence and innovation within public art, by building the capacity, knowledge and expertise of people working in public art across Scotland. PAR+RS will form a central part of a wider strategy for public art currently under development within the Scottish Arts Council. Contemporary Art Lovers Get In A Spin
Are you challenged, inspired or mystified by contemporary art? 'Spin' is a members group set up in Edinburgh and Glasgow, which takes you right to the heart of contemporary visual art. For an annual fee of £45 (£35 concs) or £75 (£55) for joint membership, you can enjoy:

  • Monthly events at contemporary art exhibitions either in Edinburgh (last Thursday of the month) or Glasgow (third Wednesday of the month)
  • The chance to meet and chat to artists, critics and curators
  • Special trips to major events in the art calendar

The Scottish Artists' Network goes Live
The Scottish Artists’ Network is a web based directory.  The website showcases Scottish based learning disabled artists and the visual arts organisations that support them.
The Scottish Artists’ Network has been set up by the Glasgow based arts organisation Project Ability to encourage interaction, collaboration and support between artists with learning disabilities and inclusive arts organisations in Scotland.  It is a one-stop-shop for people who want to find out more about who is currently working and exhibiting from the Highlands and Islands to the Borders.
The website aims to encourage individuals and groups to promote their work and to share their practice and experience to create a more confident, better connected arts and disability sector.

New creative space for Edinburgh artists
ZENDEH Lab will be a creative learning space based in Edinburgh for emerging and established artists and practitioners. The organisers are currently gathering expressions of interest from prospective participants. Art in Healthcare volunteer opportunities
Art in Healthcare
(formerly Paintings in Hospitals Scotland) is a forward-looking arts-in-health organisation working with healthcare communities to create opportunities for patients, visitors and staff to enjoy and engage with the visual arts.
The organisation is looking to recruit volunteers to be involved with its work around Scotland. AiH would like to hear from people who are passionate about visual art, interested in improving their local hospitals and looking for an enjoyable volunteering experience.

Artistri Launch
Recent graduate artists from Scottish Art Schools have been given a new platform on which to promote their work with the launch of artistri online gallery.
Never before has it been possible to view the work of artists from the four main art schools in Scotland: Edinburgh College of Art; Glasgow School of Art; Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design; and Gray’s Art School in the same online exhibition. More than 240 works representing over 20 artists at the forefront of Scottish contemporary art are exhibited online.
