Literature funding priorities – what funds are available?

Sundial Scottish Arts Council Book Awards 2009

The Sundial Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year Awards are the largest literary prizes of their kind in Scotland, and the third largest in the UK. The four categories of awards are:

  • Fiction (including the short story)
  • Poetry
  • Literary Non-Fiction
  • First Book of the Year



The winning author of each category will receive an award of £5,000. These four winning authors will then be considered for the fifth and largest prize, the Sundial Scottish Arts Council Book of the Year, worth an additional £20,000.  The winning author will therefore receive an overall prize of £25,000.

Publications fund

Support towards the costs of publishing works of literary or cultural merit that may represent some financial risk is available to Scottish-based publishers.

Minimum £500 - maximum £5,000

26 January 2009, for projects taking place after 3 April 2009.

Full details of our 2009/10 funds will be published here as soon as they are available and we anticipate that the next deadline for this fund will be April 2009.

Fast-track Writing and Storytelling fellowships

Assistance is available from suitable host organisations to employ writers or storytellers to develop their own work within specific communities.  

Minimum £3,000 - maximum £15,000

Applications for projects starting before 31 March 2009 will be accepted at any time but must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the project start date.

For projects taking place after 31 March 2009, full details will be published here as soon as they are available.

Fast-track Literature and Storytelling Development Workers

Applications are invited from suitable host organisations to employ writers or storytellers to develop their own work within specific communities.  Fellows will work on their own projects and may also interact with specified groups within the host environment.  Timescale: one month to three years.


Grants are available to cover postholder’s salary, which would typically be a minimum of £18,000 per annum or pro rata

 

Applications for projects starting before 31 March 2009 will be accepted at any time but must be submitted at least 4 weeks before the project start date.

For projects taking place after 31 March 2009, full details will be published here as soon as they are available.

Fast-track Translation

Support is available for publishers based outside the United Kingdom to help with the payment of translators’ fees for translating the work of Scottish writers.  Funding will be offered in the form of a grant which will normally not exceed 50% of the total translation fees, although in exceptional cases up to 90% of the fee can be covered.  We cannot fund a project which has already started or already taken place.

£100 – maximum of up to 90% of translation fee, subject to a limit of £5,000

Magazines

The Literature Department's policy is to support magazines which demonstrate a coherent and energetic editorial policy and which have the capacity to command a strong base of good writers as contributors.  The priority is to encourage the presentation of new work, provide a platform for emergent and established work of quality, and create opportunities for informed and vibrant critical writing on the arts and cultural matters.

Literature and Book Festivals

Support is available towards the costs of a range of festivals of high quality and of national and/or strategic importance.  Support is primarily directed towards a percentage of the costs of bringing writers to these events.

This fund does not support occasional or one-off events.

£2,000 - typical maximum £20,000

26 January 2009 for projects taking place after 3 April 2009.

Storytelling Events and Festivals

Support is available towards the costs of a variety of storytelling events and projects promoted within Scotland. Funding would cover storytellers' fees, travel, subsistence, publicity, venue hire and othe associated costs.

Minimum £1,500 - Maximum £10,000

26 January 2009 for projects taking place after 3 April 2009.
