Landmark building becomes 21st century home for Scotland's artists
11/04/2002
This excellent opportunity for development of the arts in Scotland will provide 180 high- quality, low-cost workspaces, with exhibition facilities, for artists. It is made possible by a £1.585 million grant from the Scottish Arts Council’s National Lottery Scheme.
This vital new resource will strengthen Scotland’s arts infrastructure and is the successful conclusion of five years work by WASPS (Workshop and Artists Studio Provision (Scotland) Ltd) which bought the building in 1997 with the aid of a Scottish Arts Council grant.
The Alexandra Parade building currently provides studio space for internationally renowned artists such as Ken Currie, Christine Borland and Ross Sinclair. New ceramics, stained glass and sculpture studios will ensure a diverse range of talents will benefit from the conversion.
The studios will also provide a dedicated exhibition and events space, which will allow the local community to see high-quality art in their own neighbourhood and contribute to the general renewal of Glasgow’s inner city.
Graham Berry, Director of the Scottish Arts Council said:
"The provision of high-quality workspaces and other facilities is vital if Scotland is to continue to produce first-class artists. This development not only provides the west of Scotland with superb facilities, but also secures the future of this landmark building.
"There has always been a genuine sense of community amongst the artists within this building. By taking care of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of artistic needs, WASPS has now developed a truly creative environment in which many of our best talents can flourish."
