Response to Minister's statement on culture
19/01/2006
Following the Culture Minister's statement on culture the Scottish Arts Council have issued the following response.
We are confident that the specialist knowledge and expertise of our staff will play a pivotal role in ensuring Creative Scotland is a dynamic organisation, fit for the 21st century.
We have always acknowledged that, in changing times, different demands will be placed upon us. Our commitment and our profound knowledge of the national cultural landscape that has historically served Scotland so well remains a valuable resource and an essential tool to unlock the benefits of art for all of Scotland’s communities.
The Minister’s announcement reflects the wishes of the national performing companies to have a more direct relationship with Government. But, as we said in our first submission to the Commission, there is a great deal of excellent and inspiring work being generated by the 100+ companies and artists without the title ‘national’ and we will ensure they continue to thrill, provoke and excite our imaginations. The clear emphasis on promoting the creative industries is especially welcome
Naturally, we welcome additional resources for culture, however, the Minister is aware of our view that support for the national performing companies must not come at the expense of the wider sector. We are reassured that Creative Scotland is to be an arms-length body and we will work with the Scottish Executive, local authorities and other partners to realise this vision.
Notes: The National performing Companies are only a small part of the extensive work of the Scottish Arts Council; in that we annually award over 2000 grants, support over 100 other companies, in addition to support for individual artists. The impact on staffing and other resources following their transfer is expected to be minimal.
